Essen is a mayor city in the heart of the Ruhr Area, one of the most populated agglomerations in Europe. The former centre of mining and steel industry is now an important place for the services sector. The city of Essen was recently appointed European Capital of Culture for 2010 representing the whole Ruhr Area.
